Two years ago as a newly elected State Senator, Roberts, previously having spent two terms in the Colorado House of Representatives, spoke at the ACRW meeting and received rave reviews. Roberts is the first woman elected to the Senate seat in the district. A visit to her website ellenroberts.com instantly shows that Roberts is for transparency as she has a section devoted to 2013 sponsored bills, another to Life in the Legislature as well as as a multitude of methods available to contact her. She continues to be worthy of the praise the Denver Post gave her when she was a State Representative: “Her non-partisan positions on issues critical to the state of Colorado and to her constituents have earned her respect from both voters and fellow lawmakers.” Roberts’ 6th district covers eight counties: Archuleta, Dolores, La Plata, Montezuma, Montrose, Ouray, San Juan and San Miguel. When the legislature is not in session , she does extensive traveling to these counties, speaking and meeting voters to get their input.
State Sen. Greg Brophy of District 1 is a fourth generation Coloradan who grew up north of Wray and still farms the family land that his grandmother staked as a homestead. However, he is all for adapting technology into farming and uses the latest technology to control the irrigation, run equipment and monitor the weather from his smart phone and iPad.
Brophy’s career, after graduation of CSU in 1988, began with involvement with the Colorado Farm Bureau and other farm associations. Then, in 2002, he was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives. In 2006 and 2010, Brophy was elected as State Senator to District 1. His early career experiences served as a foundation because throughout his Senate tenure, he has served on the Senate Agriculture and Finance Committees, Legislative Services Committee, was ranking Republican on the Senate Agriculture committee, and in 2013 was the ranking Republican member appointed to the Agriculture, Natural Resources and Energy Committee. In 2012 Brophy, along with a group of legislators, was awarded the “Common Sense in the Courtroom” award.
Brophy and his wife, Angela, have been married 23 years and have three children. Political issues and news can be found on his website, www.greg-brophy.com.
