Rio Blanco Fire road closure lifted

Additional hazards still present in the burned area

Posted

The road closure associated with the Rio Blanco Fire has been lifted; however, hazards remain in the burned area. The closure included National Forest System (NFS) roads 653, 653.B. and 008, (see Rio Blanco Fire Closure Map). This does not mean the area is safe, but rather the need has passed for an emergency closure due to active fire and firefighting resources. The Rio Blanco Fire is 100 percent contained, but caution is advised if traveling to the area.

Please note: Travelers are being asked to avoid driving on NFS 653.B as it was damaged as a result of heavy fire traffic and will require additional repair when soil moisture content is higher. The likelihood of getting stuck or damaging a vehicle is very high.

Burned areas are susceptible to a variety of hazards such as erosion and fire-weakened trees. Trees that remain standing but were exposed to fire can be easily blown over due to burned out roots or soil that no longer has vegetation holding it in place.

We would like to thank the public for its patience and support throughout the fire closure during the Rio Blanco Fire. These closures were a vital component in keeping the public safe in a rapidly changing landscape, and firefighting personnel safe and able to focus on their duties.
