Special to The PREVIEW
Photo courtesy Jeanette T. BeanThe American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Archuleta County will be held on Friday, June 20, at Golden Peaks Stadium at Pagosa Springs High School. Festivities begin at 5 p.m. and the walk begins soon thereafter. Luminaria will be lit at sundown.
During the opening ceremonies, cancer survivors will be honored. Each registered survivor will receive a free t-shirt and medal when they check into the event that afternoon. We hope that all cancer survivors will participate in this year’s opening ceremony, showing their pride in having survived or even in continuing to fight. The first relay lap honoring them and their caregivers begins at 6 p.m. The caregivers will start off in one direction and the survivors in the other, ultimately meeting and merging together. If you have never witnessed this event, you have no idea how moving it can be and the joy that is expressed when the two groups come together.
All registered survivors will be acknowledged by having their names read prior to walking around the track. Following the initial walk, there will be a reception for the survivors and their caregivers in the survivor tent.
If you plan to join us, and we sincerely hope you will, please register online at www.archuletarelay.org or contact Ashli Stretton, survivor/caregiver chair, at 946-7824 or email her at aastretton@gmail.com. Please feel free to call Stretton for any other information you may need.
Relay for Life of Archuleta County remembers those lost to cancer and honors those who have survived. We extend an invitation to everyone wishing to honor these brave people to join us on June 20 on the field at the high school.
