Special to The SUN

Pagosa Springs Partners in Education (PIE) is launching a Read-A-Thon at the elementary school to help build reading skills and let students play an active role in creating more fitness opportunities at school.

The Read-A-Thon will last for two weeks, from Oct. 27 to Nov. 9. Students will bring home a reading log to record daily minutes read at home and volunteers will calculate the minutes read by each child. Prizes will be given to the readers with the most minutes read in each grade level.

Local area businesses are invited and encouraged to get involved in this fundraising event by sponsoring a classroom to encourage reading. Sponsors will receive personalized thank you letters from the classroom they support, as well as recognition in The SUN and at the elementary school’s Fall Family Night on Nov. 12.

The money raised from this event will go toward developing a new play and fitness area on the south side of the school. This playground equipment will consist of structures and stations to promote fitness, health and play.

The Read-A-Thon will lead into the Fall Book Fair, which starts Monday, Nov. 10. This year’s theme is “Sir Read-a-lot’s Castle — Enter the Kingdom of Books!”
