Marianne (Mary) H. Gutknecht, 83, passed away on Oct. 15. She was born on July 21, 1935, as Marianne Stierwaldt in the outskirts of Berlin, Germany. Her parents were Alex and Jeanette Stierwaldt. She also lived in Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. She studied pharmacology in college.

Marianne met her husband-to-be, Robert James Gutknecht (affectionately called Bobby), while she was vacationing with her parents. He was fishing at the same lake on a weekend pass from the Army while stationed in Salzburg, Austria. Bobby was serving as an explosive ordinance disposal specialist, a position that he completed soon after their wedding.

After both military and civil marriage ceremonies on June 29, 1955, in Germany, she and Bobby lived in Wisconsin, Connecticut, South Dakota and Colorado. She supported her husband and daughters in their love of skiing, hunting and fishing. She loved their “lake cabin living” on weekends at Lake Cochrane in South Dakota. Marianne played a large part in the design of their mountain-view home in Colorado.

Marianne played accordion as a child and easily learned the piano in later years. She loved classical music, which she played beautifully. She enjoyed reading novels and playing cards. She found comfort in her nightly prayers.

Marianne was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Robert James Gutknecht; daughters Pamela (Donald) Mitchell and Cynthia (Donald) Palacio; grandson Zachary (Jennifer Patino) Scherschligt; great-grandsons Lucas Scherschligt and Mateo Scherschligt; nieces Susan Gutknecht and Shari O’Connell; brother-in-law David (Patricia) Gutknecht; and cousin Edeltraud Stierwaldt. All of them will miss her very much.

The family wishes to thank Paul Williams for his help and caring after the loss of our beloved Mary, Mom, Grandma and Oma.
