The roads are being dragged and worked from Pagosa to the county line, while La Plata county is doing likewise. In a few days the highway from Pagosa Springs to Durango will be in first-class shape for auto travel.

Francisco A. Quintana, a World War veteran, having served in the 157th (Colorado) Infantry, is seriously ill at his home near Juanita from tuberculosis. A physician was called to his home Wednesday to relieve him and he was found to be practically penniless and in need of financial assistance. He now draws the sum of only $10 per month in compensation from the government, but his case will be presented to the U.S. Veterans Bureau in Denver for increase or hospital care.

Someone extensively engaged in the hog raising business or otherwise (?) about midnight Tuesday purloined 10 or 12 sacks of cracked corn from the Mat Arnold feed store by breaking into the place. No arrests have been made to date.

The County Commissioners announced the appointment of a three-man County Fair Commission this week with H. Ray Macht, Woodrow Dunlap and Glenn Kimball being named to the board. Mr. Macht will be the chairman of the group.

The commissioners stated that it was their intention for the committee to draw up a plan for a county fair this fall. The fair committee will meet soon to take up the matter and discuss preliminary data. The commissioners emphasized that those residents on this side of the Divide are welcome to participate in the fair.

This is a big step forward for the agricultural interests of the county and will, with doubt, develop over the years into a very worthwhile project. The Red Ryder Round-Up grounds can be used for the county fair and in a few years it will be as fine a grounds as can be found.

The newly appointed fair board announced this week that a public meeting would be held on Tuesday, March 27 at the court house. The meeting will start at 7:30 p.m. and the board urges that all interested parties attend.

The Colorado Division Employment report on unemployment for the past few months shows Archuleta County with 7.3% unemployment in October, 8.5% in November, 10.2% in December, and 12.8% in January. The report showed 111 unemployed in January in Archuleta County. The situation should improve as soon as construction work starts and as soon as weather permits Title X employees to resume work.

Meetings tonight include the Rodeo Association, Democratic Party, Lions Club, and there is also a pee-wee wrestling match at school. Anyone that doesn’t have the evening scheduled will not have a hard time finding a place to go.

Automobile license sales in Archuleta County are up 8% over last year, according to County Clerk Felima Gardner. Total sales for all types of vehicles through February 29 of this year were 2218 and last year they were 2059.

Record-breaking numbers of Spring Breakers flooding ski slopes, hotels and rental shops last week left some in Pagosa Springs gasping for breath.

“Last week was super-swamped,” Larry Fisher, owner of Ski and Bow Rack, said. “It seemed like everyone all showed up at once this year, instead of over two weeks.  We’ve made it through though, mentally and emotionally,”

The three-day rush for the slopes March 12-14 made ski poles, shoes, skis and snowboards nearly extinct.

Juanalee Park, co-owner of Alpen Haus Ski Center, said the store rented out of poles and came close to renting out of skis last Monday.

“We ran out of snowboards a couple of days, but now they’re all back and ready to go,” said John Steinert, one of the owners of Juan’s Mountain Sports.

That translated into some extreme numbers at Wolf Creek ski area as well.

Rosanne Haidorfer-Pitcher, marketing and sales director at Wolf Creek, said a record-breaking 5,125 skiers hit the slopes March 13. Numbers smashed the previous record, set in December 1998, by 182 skiers.

“Overall on the season we’re having a great year,” she said. “The snow has been the best we’ve seen in 10 years.”
