Mat Arnold the past week purchased the Grant Shield building on San Juan street, occupied by the Journal office, and also leased from John P. Lynn the ground occupied by said building and the building and lot adjoining the Shields property. He is now installing his gasoline tank in front of the latter, where he will maintain a service station this summer.
The town hall, which is to be used as a restroom and information bureau by the Women’s Civic Club this summer, is now being papered.
The new Farmington gasoline is causing no end of difficulty with the cars in this vicinity. It is exceedingly high test gas and carburetors must be adjusted for it.
The At Last ranch shipped in 200 head of fine cattle from Aztec Tuesday for the ranch on West fork.
Think This Over. The next time anybody yelps about a typographical error in this paper, think of this: In an ordinary column there are 10,000 pieces of type, there are seven possible wrong positions for each letter, there are 70,000 chances to make errors, and millions of possible transpositions. In the sentence, “To be or not to be,” by transpositions alone, 2,759,022 errors can be made. — Ex.

The auction held for the benefit of the Red Ryder Round-Up rodeo grounds was a huge success in every respect with everyone in the county cooperating to the highest extent. Items sold at the sale received very good prices in most cases and the bidding was spirited throughout the sale.
Bob Oversteg, Durango auctioneer, who donated his services for the afternoon, did much to further the success of the sale. At one time Mr. Oversteg managed to auction a five dollar bill off for $9.50. Several of the original articles were returned to be auctioned off a second time and quite often Mr. Oversteg secured a higher price the second time. Mrs. Oversteg acted as cashier at the sale and Mr. Rube Connelley was the clerk of the sale.
The total receipts realized from the sale totaled slightly more than $1200 with the cash donations. This is a tidy sum and shows that he community realizes the possibilities of the rodeo grounds and are willing to cooperate in their construction.

Telephone service locally has gone from bad to worse. A great deal of the trouble is in long distance calls and the trouble experienced there is on Bell Telephone Co. lines rather than lines of Universal Telephone Co. However, the service within the community is deteriorating and construction plans for a system are still underway. It will be some time, though, before there is any noticeable improvement.
Welfare departments throughout Colorado will not be forced to close down for lack of funds at the time. The State Legislature has taken actions to insure operating funds until such time as final appropriations are made.
Newsprint has taken another increase in price and part of this increase must be passed on to our customers. Predictions are that paper prices will level out some time next year, but inflation continues to be a major factor in newspaper production.
Because of this price increase adjustment of advertising rates will take place in the SUN. These are being held at a minimum. Subscription prices and classified ad prices will stay the same unless there is another hike in paper prices.
