The services offered by the Pagosa Springs SUN in its modern newspaper and commercial plant were considerable improved this past week with installation of a new casting box. The machine is known as a Hammond EasyKaster and is a very definite improvement over the old machine which had seen many years of service.
The new box will permit the casting of a full-page stereotype at one time and has modern heating and pouring devices. The melting post on the machine will hold 400 pounds of metal at one time, permitting of much speedier operation.
This machine is used to make lead molds of pictures, drawings and illustrations which are used in the news and advertising columns of the SUN. The construction work on the new building to house the local ambulances is proceeding rapidly and the building has taken shape. It will have a solar heating system in it, but it likely won’t get a tryout until next fall.
Snow has kept piling up on Wolf Creek Pass and Ed Teem, official weather observer reports that he hasn’t seen the snow depth gauge for some time. It has been buried under more than eight feet of snow.
However, early this week the snow settled down a great deal and the marker showed seven feet on March 8. Snow has been heavy to date in March, totaling 80 inches for the first eight days. This brings the season’s fall to 390 inches and there are still several weeks to go before snow plows and snow shovels are put away up on Wolf Creek.

County Manager Dennis Hunt’s move this past week to hire two of six applicants for two openings in the county building department fanned the flames of difference among the three county commissioners.
Commissioner Bill Downey agrees with Hunt’s action, while commissioners Gene Crabtree and Alden Ecker disagree. Even though they disagree, Crabtree and Ecker are not making an issue of their disagreement. They are allowing the hiring process initiated by Hunt in this instance to follow its course.
Last month, Hunt resigned as county manager after accepting a similar position with Montrose County. In accordance with his contract with Archuleta County, Hunt gave 30-day notice of his intention of leave, and continues to serve until the 30 days is up March 23.
A difference of opinion concerning Hunt’s duties during his last days countdown is a the root of the problem. Crabtree and Ecker say they want to be involved in the interviewing process for hiring key employees. Downey says he believes Hunt should continue with the hiring as long as he remains here. Hunt said, in the absence of other instructions, by making the decision he carried out his duties the same as in the past and according to his contract.
