Mrs. Laura White, who recently rented from John P. Lynn of Pawhuska, Okla., the Springs hotel, bath houses and other property in connection with the springs, assumed charge on Tuesday of this week.

The auto camping ground in the park had its first guests of the season on Sunday night, a family seeking a location and traveling by motor truck.

A.W. Baker, who recently organized the San Juan Basin Turkey Ranch, Inc. with seat of business at Tiffany, came up from that place Wednesday in the interest of the corporation.

The Southwestern Colorado Lumber company, better known as the McAlpine, sawmill, has just completed constructing a log chute on Devil mountain, west of Dyke, 1450 feet in length. By this means, a big majority of the company’s logs will be easily “shot” down Devil mountain to the mill proper to be sawed without hauling and very little skidding.

The members of the Pagosa Springs Volunteer Fire Department elected their officers for the coming year at a regular meeting last Friday night. Dick DeVore was re-elected chief for the coming year and Bud Patterson was names captain while J.F. Thiele was re-elected as lieutenant.

Other officers elected were: secretary, Don Warr; treasurer Willie Voorhis; custodian, George Yanase and Public Relations officer, Glen Edmonds. The Firemen also voted to donate $50 out of the funds raised by the firemen’s ball towards the purchase of the resuscitator.

The Volunteer Fire Department is starting on its fourth year of operation under the present set-up and during the time they have been organized have saved the town many thousands of dollars in fire loss. The past year has seen the addition of three hundred feet of new hose, two new smoke masks and some minor equipment.

The firemen all donate their time and efforts in the interests of the fire department and receive no renumeration for their work or any clothes ruined while attending fires. All members are volunteers and they have developed a most efficient organization.

An announcement was made Tuesday of this week that funds had been approved for a grant and a loan to the Archuleta Water Co. for service extensions. The extension is that east from town along U.S. 160, south along highway 84, and north on the Four Mile road.

Lack of adequate water has long been a problem for the homes and businesses in these areas. While the plans do not call for as much extension as is desired, they do extend service to the areas where the need is the greatest.

Such grants are a big help, as is the loan. However, the town must be repaid and at present the backers of the plan did not feel that longer extensions, or a bigger loan, were justified. Revenue must be equal to the payments and a much longer extension would be prohibitive when it came to loan repayment.

It would now appear that residents in the areas affected will be able to look forward to an adequate supply of treated water before the end of the year.

A letter of resignation was submitted yesterday to the county commissioners by Archuleta County Manger Dennis Hunt. The resignation will be effective as of March 23, according to the letter.

“I was surprised,” said Gene Crabtree, chairman of the board of county commissioners. “I knew he had looked around before about advancement and other opportunities. I knew he had done some interviews the past couple of weeks. He will leave a void that will be hard to fill. We’ll have to do some shuffling to fill the vacancy.”

Hunt is the only manager Archuleta County has ever had, having the office since August of 1991. He has been the county administrative officer of all administrative functions in the county, as well as budget officer. His annual salary in the 2001 budget is $61,400.

“During the next month I will perform my duties to the best of my ability,” Hunt said in his resignation letter, “and it is my intent to make this transition as smooth as possible and without disruption. I intend to make myself available as much as possible during the next thirty days.”
