W.J. Nossaman is now producing coal in his new mine recently opened on a state lease on Coal creek, for public consumption. He has been engaged in development work for some months, building roads, tunneling, etc. and now has a 9-foot vein of good coal which he has commenced hauling to local consumers.

There will be no delivery of mail on Christmas day with the exception of special delivery mail. First class mail will be dispatched to trains and incoming mail will be received but not “worked.”

The postponed November term of the district court for Archuleta county will convene next Tuesday, Dec. 15. The docket is very light, there being but one case for trial by jury — that of Jose S. Rodriquez vs. William H. Hurt. The jury has been summoned to appear on Wednesday, Dec. 16.

Mrs. R.P. Hott of Tiffany spent the past week at this resort, bathing and visiting with old-time friends.

The town is rapidly assuming a Holiday aspect with the many nice decorations in private homes and businesses. The REA crew and Town Marshall Sanders have put up the city decorations and the big Christmas tree at the flag pole, was erected by members of the Lions Club. The tree was donated by Lion Paul Decker.

The students at the local school have made large wreaths which will be placed on the lamp standards some time this week. They will add much to the appearance of the business section and all that will be needed is a little of mother Nature’s beautiful white.

Many of the homes and businesses entered in the lighting contest are being readied and it is anticipated that even more will be entered than in previous years.

The purpose of the contest is to spread the spirit of Christmas by means of decorations and light. The contest will provide pleasure for everyone participating, and will help beautify our city this Christmas time.

Along about this time of the year, when wood hauling increases, coal buying is on the rise, and so are the other fuel bills, it would seem to be a good time to think about solar heat. The Pagosa Fire Protection District is building a new firehouse that will use that form of heat. This is an area where there are many, many sunshiny days and some very cold nights.

This might be an ideal place for a pilot project by some agency of the government to determine if such a form of heat is economically desirable. Latest reports indicate that much of the design work on solar heating systems is being done for new buildings and the heating system is built into the design. However, there are so many homes already built that it would seem wise to start some kind of planning to use solar heating in these homes already constructed. We have read of only one such system and it is estimated to cost about six to ten thousand dollars.

It is said that this system will provide about 50% of the heat needed for an average 1000 to 1500 square foot home. It isn’t hard to figure the economics of this.

For the second time in three months, Randall Davis, president of the board of education for Archuleta County School District 50 Joint, has been named for an exclusive honor.

The Colorado all-state school board awards program annually recognizes five individual school board members and one whole board for outstanding leadership.

The program contends these members demonstrate excellence in board leadership, sound reasoning, foresight in planning, and the ability to build relationships. Individuals are nominated for the honor by their school board and whole boards are nominated by the superintendent.

The citation for Davis said, in part:

“Randall insists on the development of sound district policies and refers to those policies when making decisions. He believes in looking at all sides of an issue and strives to see that all viewpoints are heard. Randall deals with all issues that come before the board in a calm, intelligent and thoughtful manner, and he maintains the dignity of each individual who appears before the board.
