October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness, supporting survivors, and bringing attention to an issue that impacts individuals and families in every community.
Throughout the month, we are given an opportunity to learn, to have important conversations and to stand together in support of those whose lives have been impacted by domestic violence.
Supporting survivors begins with understanding that no two experiences of domestic violence are exactly the same. Abuse can affect every part of a person’s life, and the path toward safety and healing is rarely simple or predictable. What someone needs, when they need it and what moving forward looks like will be different for every survivor.
Meaningful support begins when we make space for those differences with compassion, patience and understanding.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month asks us to look beyond individual experiences and consider the kind of community we are creating together.
Domestic violence thrives in silence and isolation, and changing that requires more than awareness alone. It requires a willingness to recognize warning signs, challenge attitudes that excuse or minimize abusive behavior, model healthy relationships and create spaces where people feel safe enough to ask for help.
Throughout October, Rise will join communities across the country in raising awareness, sharing resources and creating opportunities to better understand domestic violence and its impact. These conversations are important not because awareness alone creates change, but because awareness can change the way we respond. It can make us more thoughtful in the questions we ask, more intentional in the way we support others and more willing to speak when something is not right.
This past Saturday, Oct. 3, our community showed us exactly what it means to turn awareness into action.
At Runway for Rise, we witnessed the power of collective purpose as we raised a record-breaking amount that will go directly toward providing essential services for survivors and prevention education programs.
To our amazing sponsors, dedicated teams, enthusiastic voters, tireless volunteers and our wonderful community: You are the heart of this mission. The energy, compassion and commitment surrounding the event were a powerful reminder of what can happen when a community refuses to stay silent and instead chooses to show up. This is what community looks like, and this is how we Rise Above Violence.
As we begin Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we invite our community to listen, learn, participate and reflect on the role each of us can play.
Supporting survivors is not always found in grand gestures. Often, it is found in the quieter choices: listening without judgment, offering compassion, creating a safe place to turn, continuing to show up and reminding someone that they do not have to navigate what comes next alone.
