obit-Dutton_Carl_croppedCarl J. Dutton was born Feb. 29, 1929, in the Hatcher Boarding House in Pagosa Springs and passed away from ALS complications (Lou Gherig’s Disease) on Sept. 10.

He was born to Perry Albert (Pat) Dutton and Byrel Bramwell. Carl was born into two pioneer families — the Duttons and Bramwells. Both families homesteaded land in Archuleta County and in Montezuma County. Carl attended school in Pagosa Springs and attended college at “old” Fort Lewis College in Hesperus. He later passed the Colorado State Board of Engineering and received his professional engineering license. Carl worked for the Colorado State Highway Department for 34 years, retiring in 1984.

In 1949, Carl met Dorothy Mae Caylor of Dolores, and they were married on Jan. 10, 1950, in Aztec, N.M. To this union, four daughters were born.

Carl was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 2456 of Monte Vista and the Masonic Lodge No. 145 of Dolores.

Carl’s parents, Perry Albert and Bryel, his brother, Sidney “A,” and his wife, Dorothy, preceded him in death.

Carl leaves behind his daughters: Sharon McMeen, of Castle Rock; Cindy and husband, Don Egger, of Bloomfield, N.M.; Michelle “Mickey” Dutton, of Glendale, Ariz.; and Nanette Chadwick, of Cortez; his grandchildren, Kim McMeen, Ray Egger, Dawna Cunningham, Heather Curtis and Kole Chadwick; great-grandchildren Dettrik and KiMarie Egger, Kendra Mueller, Barron and JT Cunningham, and Tiegan Chadwick; he also leaves behind four step-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to MDA/ALS, 720 South Colorado Blvd., #380S, Denver, CO 80246, in memory of Carl Dutton for ALS/Equipment Inventory Program.
