Arrest made in Town Park restroom arson incident

At approximately 7:02 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9,  Pagosa Springs Police officers responded to a report of vandalism at the Town Park restroom facilities located at 351 Hermosa St.

Upon arrival, officers discovered evidence of multiple small fires, including a pile of burned toilet paper inside the men’s restroom. The restroom’s toilet paper dispenser had also been forcibly broken open. Outside the facility, several additional burn spots were found where toilet paper had been ignited near surrounding trees.

The incident resulted in minor floor damage and smoke damage inside the restroom facility.

Following an investigation, the suspect was identified as 55-year-old Don Alexander. Alexander was taken into custody in downtown Pagosa Springs at approximately 9:30 a.m. the same day. He has been charged with the following:

  • CRS 18-4-102(1) – First-degree arson.
  • CRS 18-4-105(1) – Fourth-degree arson for recklessly starting a fire.
