Archuleta County tire collection event a success despite challenging weather

Posted

This tire collection event presented some challenging conditions, with heavy rain and muddy conditions throughout the day. Despite the weather, the Archuleta County team worked together to assist everyone who participated in this important community event.

In just one day, nearly 1,200 tires were collected and removed from properties throughout the county.

Removing unwanted tires provides several important benefits to our community. Tires can serve as significant fuel during a wildfire, potentially contributing to the intensity and spread of a fire. Tire removal also helps eliminate potential mosquito-breeding sites.

With recent reports of West Nile virus in Archuleta County, reducing these potential breeding areas is another important step toward protecting public health and reducing the risk of future outbreaks.

There are also benefits to property owners and the community as a whole. Removing accumulated tires helps improve the appearance and condition of properties, and can contribute to maintaining or improving property values throughout the county.

This event was made possible through grant funding from the state of Colorado, which helps cover the cost of the tire collection program held every three years.

A sincere thank you goes to everyone who helped make this event successful.

It truly was a community effort, and together we were able to make a meaningful difference for Archuleta County’s environment, public health, wildfire preparedness and quality of life.
