August is a time for last-minute fun before the school year begins. The Chamber is here to support all the fun in August, as well as provide you with some fun learning through the fall.
Grillin’ and Distillin’ is finally here. It is this Saturday at the Archuleta County Fairgrounds from noon until 5 p.m. We will have master grillers and backyard grillers; we just need you to come out and enjoy all the amazing and delicious BBQ.
We will be having a People’s Choice winner, as well as winners in the categories of beans, chicken, ribs and brisket. So, with choices like that, a good time will surely be had.
Our distillers are a competitive group, as well, and they will be vying for the People’s Choice Award.
We will have retail vendors present to add to the fun, along with some food for purchase from food trucks for those not wanting to have BBQ. Plenty of cold beverages will be there for sale so we can all stay hydrated and focused on having a good time.
This event will be fun for the family with face painting and some great live music. Tylor Brandon will be there as well as SolOverLuna — knockout music for what is sure to be a knockout day.
We really look forward to everyone coming out and enjoying themselves.
I would be remiss to not remind everyone to not drink and drive. There will be spirits to enjoy and taste, but we care about the safety of you and others. If you find you can’t drive and need a ride, please find someone from the Chamber and we will be happy to help arrange a safe way home, or plan ahead and arrange a designated driver.
There is more fun to be had this year, and lots of memories to be made in each of our lives.
Please come on out and join us at Grillin’ and Distillin’ Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. at the Archuleta County Fairgrounds.
Learning opportunities
The Chamber would also like to let everyone know about two great free learning opportunities. These are brought to us by Local First in Durango and the state of Colorado.
From Sept. 16 to Nov. 11, local business institute coaches will guide a cohort of learners through “New Thinking for Greater Success.” This will be an interactive six-week virtual cohort open to only 12 participants located in Southwest Colorado.
There will be weekly 90-minute live sessions, a toolkit and optional personal coaching. Discover opportunities for growth, start-up or diversification, and record your journey in a customizable guidebook.

The second training available now is called “Small Business Talent Magnet Employees — one of the biggest components of your business.”
Learn how to attract and retain employees, especially younger, value-driven people. Build inclusive, flexible and engaging workplace practices. It is an on-demand, self-paced course open to small businesses across Colorado. It includes video lessons, a toolkit and a customizable guidebook.
