554 PSMC patients potentially impacted by 2013 privacy breach

Today, the Pagosa Springs Medical Center (PSMC) published a public notice, consistent with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) patient privacy law, confirming that, in 2013, PSMC experienced a HIPAA violation that could have impacted up to 554 patients.

According to Chief Administration Officer Ann Bruzzese, the incident, which occurred in July and September of 2013, involved a former employee who accessed the 2013 scheduling calendar that included patient names, calendar of pending appointments, and in some circumstances, such information as a date of birth, phone number, a procedure, test or symptom.
