Wolf Creek Gun and Bow Association
The Wolf Creek Gun and Bow Association hosted its second archery competitive shoot on Sunday, March 3, at Cloman Park.
Approximately 60 archers attended the event on a perfect day of sun and fun in Pagosa Springs where 3-D animal targets were placed along a winding trail for archers to test their skills. The targets were placed at various distances ranging from 20 feet to 80 yards.
Archers were required to range or guess the distances as part of animal hunt. Targets were arranged in various configurations, some hiding in grass or behind trees, and others were standing, sitting and laying on the ground.
Classifications for the shoot were divided into eight groups for all to enjoy. The list of winners is as follows:
• Men’s Open: First place Owen Phone Jr., Dulce, N.M.
• Women’s Open: First place Barbara Ellis, Pagosa Springs.
• Men’s Bowhunter: First place David Archuleta, Blanco, N.M.
• Women’s Bowhunter: First place Melanie John, Chinle, Ariz.
• Men’s Traditional: First place Tadd Quiller, Pagosa Springs.
• Women’s Traditional: First place Sydney Quiller, Pagosa Springs.
• Youth: First-place tie between Christopher Manwell, Dulce, N.M., and Deegan Hoffschneider, Pagosa Springs.
• Cubs: First place Cole S.
At the end of the event some archers elected to try their skill at shooting a metal bear target with the center cut out. If they managed to hit the center, their arrow was saved. If they hit anywhere else on the bear, their arrow was shattered by the steel. The winner was awarded $100 cash.
The Wolf Creek Gun and Bow Association would like to thank Wes Laverty, Jody Ellis and the many other volunteers who took time to set up the targets for the competition and later take them down. The volunteers for this event worked hand in hand to make it a safe, friendly and successful archery competition.
