UU service to focus on gratitude, bread communion

Posted

We come to the time in the month of November when our focus turns a bit more toward family and friends gathered in thanksgiving and bounty. The idea of breaking bread is a phrase and tradition with deep roots.

For the Pagosa Unitarian Universalist (UU) Fellowship, the Nov. 16 Sunday Service will host Julie Loar, offering wisdom and inspiration with “Gratitude and Breaking Bread.”

Loar states, “The act symbolizes unity, hospitality and shared connection, often used to foster bonds between people. The act of physically breaking bread together is a powerful gesture of sharing, whether for a casual meal or a significant celebration. The phrase and practice originate from ancient times when people would literally break a loaf of bread apart to share it, often as a sign of hospitality, covenant or trust.”

Loar is a favored speaker both locally and beyond. She is the multiple award-winning author of eight books and dozens of articles, and previously served on the board of the Pagosa UU Fellowship and many community organizations.

We are honored to have Loar along with musical offerings by NewFangle, namely Dave Pettus, Susan Kuhns and Dave McNamee, as we we gather in community for conscious giving of thanks through ritual and song.

We will also share in the ancient ritual of breaking bread together. All are invited to bring familial tradition, ancestral or a favorite/necessary dietary offering of bread for a UU-style bread communion as we experience this ancient practice.

Our Sunday morning programs begin at 10:30 a.m., and all are invited to stay for coffee hour after the service. We hold space for many topics to engage and deepen growing our spirits, building beloved community and doing good in the world.

Our Community Hub is a place for groups to gather and grow, such as weekly meditation practice from 5:30 to 7 p.m. each Sunday evening, and other groups throughout the month.

The fellowship is one of the faith partners of Pagosa Pride and will provide space for a short program for Transgender Day of Remembrance on Thursday, Nov. 20, beginning at 6 p.m.
