Upper San Juan Search and Rescue (USJSAR) is now accepting applications for new volunteer members. The open enrollment period is open now through the end of February.
USJSAR is a local, all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works in partnership with and under the authority of the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office to provide search, rescue and emergency response services across Archuleta County and the surrounding backcountry.
The team responds year-round to a wide range of incidents. Hikers, hunters and missing persons can find themselves in perilous situations, including becoming lost or injured in rugged terrain and challenging conditions.
Recruitment is open to community members who are motivated, dependable, and willing to commit time and effort to serving others. Prior search and rescue experience is not required. New members participate in a structured training program covering wilderness navigation, medical response, technical rescue, winter operations, radio communications, organized search techniques and more. Training is conducted locally and is designed to progressively build skills and confidence over time.
Team members train regularly throughout the year and must be physically capable of operating in mountainous terrain, sometimes for extended periods and in adverse weather. Strong teamwork, good judgment and a willingness to continuously learn are essential qualities for successful members.
The application period will close at the end of February. Interested individuals are encouraged to carefully review expectations, time commitments and application requirements, and submit their materials before the deadline. Applications received after the enrollment period closes will be considered during the next recruitment cycle.
USJSAR relies entirely on volunteers and community support to carry out its mission. Serving on the team is a meaningful way to contribute directly to public safety and to help protect residents and visitors who recreate in the mountains around Pagosa Springs.
