Unitarian Universalists hold annual picnic

Posted

The annual fellowship picnic of the Pagosa Unitarian Universalists (UUs) included singing, poems and good food.

We spoke of ways we want to continue to hold space for welcoming a community of diversity and inclusion.

We invite all those seeking a place of open hearts and minds, lifelong learners with a touch of the divine, to join our small but growing community.

The Pagosa UU Fellowship also hosts a Buddhist meditation practice led by Dan Dempster, local artist, certified meditation instructor and authorized Dharma teacher.

Dempster studied for more than 18 years as student of Khenpo Migmar Tseten, Buddhist chaplain at Harvard University.

We are fortunate to have this mindfulness offering, and newcomers are always welcome as those more experienced deepen their practice.

Dempster states, “These are simple yet profound and beautiful practices based on cultivating the Four Immeasurables (love, compassion, joy and equanimity). Please bring your favorite cookies to share over tea. Come regularly to deepen your practice. Attending group practice will also encourage, support and reinforce your daily home practice.”

Join us at Pagosa UU in uptown Pagosa Springs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sundays. Calm-abiding, Tonglen and mantra practices are followed by a short Dharma talk and discussion. This is a great way to end one week and prepare to begin another.

The idea of moving our practice time to Sunday evening has been met with great enthusiasm. Enjoy the weekend with family and friends, have an early dinner and finish it off with beautiful and authentic meditation practices. This is a great way to end one week and prepare to begin another. All are welcome. Just bring a kind heart and an open mind. We can even help you find those.

Sunday, July 13 will be another shift to our normally scheduled small group, Going Deeper.

Many of the fellowship’s members will attend the Sunday worship on the Pine River with the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango. They hold an annual retreat for UUs in our Four Corners area, and it is a joy to gather with friends in this beautiful setting. It is also an opportunity to hear from UU ordained ministers. We will carpool from the fellowship at about 9 a.m. for the 10:30 service. If interested, you can email us or simply meet to carpool.

Find us in Unit B-15 of the Greenbriar Plaza, 301 N. Pagosa Blvd., on the north side facing Pagosa Peak. We welcome diversity and invite everyone to share in our faith community.
