Town issues wastewater system alert, system experiencing critical situation

Posted
Update, Feb. 11, 3:30 p.m.:

The town’s wastewater system is operating, but we’re still dealing with a pump station issue and are not back to normal operations. To reduce strain on the system, we’re asking the public to continue conserving water until repairs are complete.

Crews are on site, and a bypass setup is being finalized. Additional backup equipment is also being brought in to strengthen system reliability. We’ll share another update as soon as the system is fully stabilized.

How you can help right now
  • Keep showers short.
  • Delay laundry and dishwasher use if possible.
  • Flush only when necessary.
  • Limit nonessential water use.
Thank you for your cooperation as we work to stabilize the system and prevent further disruptions.

Original, Feb. 10:

Utility crews have been working since this afternoon to address a failure at Pump Station #2, leaving the pump out of operation.

This pump failure has the potential of causing liquid waste to overflow the well. An emergency bypass pump is on the scene and being connected. Work is anticipated to be completed in the next six hours.

We urgently need support from residents within the Pagosa Springs Sanitation General Improvement District (PSSGID), which generally lies east of Piedra Road and includes the downtown area.

How you can help right now

To minimize use of the wastewater system, please limit the amount of water going down the drain in all forms:
  • Only flush solid waste and minimize flushing liquid waste.
  • Take shorter showers and baths.
  • Avoid using the sink, washing machine and dishwasher.
We’ll keep you updated as soon as we have more information.

Thank you for doing your part to protect our system and prevent further disruptions.
