Thingamajig Theatre Company is ringing in the new year with holiday cheer as its youth theater program, Whatchamawhozits, presents “Elf Jr.” on Jan. 3 and 4 at the Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts.

The family-friendly musical is based on the popular holiday film and follows Buddy, a human raised by elves at the North Pole, as he travels to New York City to discover his true identity.

Filled with humor, heart, and upbeat musical numbers, “Elf Jr.” has become a seasonal favorite for audiences of all ages.

The production features a cast of local youth performers who have spent several weeks rehearsing, learning choreography, strengthening vocal skills and developing confidence on stage.

Whatchamawhozits, Thingamajig Theatre Company’s youth education program, emphasizes a professional rehearsal process within a supportive and creative environment, giving young actors the opportunity to experience what it’s like to be part of a fully realized theatrical production.

“Our youth program is about more than putting on a show,” said Laura Moore, program director. “It’s about teaching collaboration, discipline and storytelling — skills that serve these kids well both on stage and off.”

The production caps a strong youth theater season that has included “James and the Giant Peach” and “Beetlejuice,” reflecting both the growth of the program and the range of material available to young performers.

Directed and produced by Thingamajig Theatre Company’s professional staff, “Elf Jr.” allows participants to work alongside experienced theater artists while performing in a production complete with costumes, lighting and sound.

The program is designed to nurture creativity while also building responsibility, teamwork and a strong sense of accomplishment.

Performances will take place Jan. 3 and 4 at the Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts.

Tickets are available through the box office and online at pagosacenter.org. Families are encouraged to purchase tickets early, as youth productions often sell quickly.

With its joyful message and energetic young cast, “Elf Jr.” offers a festive way for the community to celebrate local youth talent and support arts education in Pagosa Springs.
