The Holy Spirit’s wall of fire is not singing a Johnny Cash love song, where he was falling into a burning ring of fire. And his passion burned, burned, burned. This wall is a fire of God’s love and protection. When we surrender to the Lord, He places His Holy Spirit in us and He becomes a wall around us.
“For I, says the Lord, will be a wall of fire around her, and I will be the glory in her midst” (Zechariah 2:5, NIKV). He is talking about Jerusalem, and also the believer. In other words, God is taking the bullets for those He loves and calls His own. We can trust him when the bullets fly.
He will protect our minds with love. He will protect our families if we make Him Lord of our homes. He will lead us in the direction He wants us to go if we’ll go with Him. He will protect our careers if we are where He wants us to be. It’s our choice. It takes faith to step up into the light of that fire.
A television pastor talked about dark and dangerous days coming and a spiritual reset happening in our country. When he said reset, I perked up my ears. I wondered if people are ready for change and will step up in faith or collapse in fear. We have been equipped for such days ahead.
Do we know how intense God’s emotions are for us — not against us? With great force and energy He loves us and protects us with the Holy Spirit, and has placed His wall of fire around us.
Solomon tells the Shulamite, “Set me as a seal … For love is strong as death, jealousy as cruel as the grave, its flames are flames of fire, A most vehement flame” (Song of Solomon 8:6, NKJV). The king is saying to her she can trust him, his love is like flames around her. Wow. Can we grab on to that concept?
The Shulamite’s angry brothers worried about their sister. They questioned what would become of their sister. They saw her undesirable, with no breast. But when she would be spoken for, they would build a wall around her and a door enclosed with boards of cedar to protect her.
She responded prophetically and confidently, “I am a wall.” They didn’t have to close her in or decorate her, or speak condescending words to her. She had the Spirit in her, around her, and nothing, even their words, could penetrate it. (See Song of Solomon 8:8-10).
If God permits the arrows to pierce the wall of fire, He has a reason. It’s not my reasoning, but His. He wants us to praise Him in all circumstances. He is involved with us and knows what we need.
Someone questioned me, “It’s been two years, and you’re still limping around?” I heard a hint of judgment in their words. Did I not have enough faith to walk without a walker?
“Yes, I do have faith, but God had a reason why the wall came down and I was hurt. I’ve learned much about myself. The Lord said to me, ‘I’m re-setting your clock.’ I didn’t know what that meant at the time. But time unfolds the answer. And I see clearly through the smoke today. This holy fire has been burning off the dross.”
She gave me a look as if I was crazy. I have learned over these months of recovery what God meant. I am actually experiencing better health, family members working together, and my personal spiritual growth is unmatched from my earlier years. All I know today is Jesus is the answer, and I’m fine with it.
Young people are scared. Their future looks uncertain. This is on their minds continually. They haven’t yet learned that they are equipped with all they need for this day in time. They have God’s protection of a wall of fire around them. He wildly cares for them and will only allow in their lives what grows them spiritually.
One of the young men in my Bible study said, “I have so many questions. I don’t know what or who to believe anymore.” This is a young man who has been in organized churches all his life, and yet is baffled as to what he is seeing today.
I told him, “Pray. The Lord has not left the building. He has vowed to protect us. We have to believe what He says. Believe in Jesus; He is the answer for everything.”
Final brushstroke: The wall of fire is invisible until someone tempts God. Our walk with God is a faith walk, not by sight. I would rather be surrounded by his unseen protection than build my own wall. I’m not sure what this reset will look like in the days ahead, but we can be sure we will come through the darkness with God’s help and light.
