After a sold-out opening night, Thingamajig Theatre Company’s “The Shark Is Broken” continues Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16 and 17, at 7 p.m. at the Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts.
Audience comments following the performances praised the acting, staging, script and lighting. One commenter called the cast “the spitting image of the original movie cast,” while others praised the talkback and scenery.
The play looks back at the making of “Jaws,” when the mechanical shark, nicknamed Bruce, repeatedly malfunctioned during filming. The delays left Robert Shaw, Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss waiting together aboard the Orca.
Written by Ian Shaw, Robert Shaw’s son, and Joseph Nixon, the comedy imagines the arguments, jokes and moments of connection that might have filled those hours. It is not a retelling of the movie, but a look at the actors behind Quint, Chief Brody and Matt Hooper.
Directed by Laura Moore, Thingamajig’s production features Tim Moore as Robert Shaw, Scott Morehead as Roy Scheider and Cameron Vargas as Richard Dreyfuss. The play began in England in 2019, went on to London’s West End and Broadway, and received an Olivier Award nomination.
Thingamajig’s teen company will open “The Addams Family” Sunday, Oct. 18, at 3 p.m.
After the success of last year’s “Beetlejuice Jr.,” the teens will return with a musical comedy about Wednesday Addams, played by Olive Fladwood, who has fallen for an ordinary young man. She asks her father, Gomez, played by Finlay Moore, to keep the romance from Morticia, played by Leela Simpson. The secret becomes harder to keep when the young man and his parents come to dinner.
Tickets for all performances are available at pagosacenter.org or by calling (970) 731-SHOW (7469).
