The monthly meeting of the San Juan Stargazers will be on Thursday, Feb. 6.
We are meeting at the regular time of 6 p.m. for our social and snack time. Please bring something to share, if possible. We will be at our regular location — the United Methodist Church at 434 Lewis St. Please use the convenient parking lot and side door that leads into the kitchen and fellowship hall. We keep the front doors to the church locked.
For the next two months we will use the time from 7 to 7:30 p.m. at our meetings to brainstorm new ideas for our summer night sky programs. Chimney Rock has attained International Dark Sky status, and we need to make changes and improvements in the program accordingly. If you have suggestions, please bring them.
From 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. we will have our Great Courses recorded program on the solar system.
I like to remind myself when I look up at the numerous stars visible in our night sky that each star we see is the center of its own solar system which we cannot see without a very powerful telescope like the James Webb. Planets that are not in our own solar system are called exoplanets. Only the star is visible because it is creating the energy within it to shine and be seen.
Our Great Courses programs are recorded and presented by outstanding astronomers. They are so enjoyable and we learn so much.
Ann Marie Kemp has a wonderful surprise for us on how members can make better use of these programs.
If you would like to join the San Juan Stargazers, you will also receive Reflector Magazine, which is the publication of the National Astronomical League of which you automatically become a member. To join both groups and get an excellent astronomy magazine, annual membership is only $25 per family. You can join the club at any of our meetings or on our website. Check out our continuously changing website, sanjuanstargazers.org, for new information and spectacular photos.
We can be your helpful connection to exploring our extraordinary universe.
