The Pagosa Springs High School Pirate golf team finished second at the Pagosa Springs Invitational on Aug. 28, with Johnathon Smith shooting five under par to win the event.
The Monte Vista Pirates were the top team at the five-team tournament with an overall score of 236, with Pagosa following in second with a 244.
The tournament was a combined varsity/junior varsity tournament.
Coach Mark Faber noted Pagosa’s golfers all played part of their round really well, but that “there’s still more there.”
Smith took first with a 66 on the par-71 course.
Smith birdied on seven holes, shot par on nine and shot bogeys on two holes.
“He played really well,” Faber said, adding later, “Johnathon played about as well as he could play, I’d say.”
Montezuma-Cortez’s Vince Lopez finished second with a 73.
Cedar Liverett finished sixth with an 87, shooting a birdie on one hole, par on seven holes and bogeys on four.
Tyler Dimond finished tied for ninth with a 91, shooting par on six holes and bogeys on six.
Isabel Galloway finished tied for 27th with a score of 108, shooting bogeys on four holes.
“It was OK,” Faber said of the day, acknowledging Pagosa’s Pirates struggled a little bit.
He added the day was not bad, but was not great.
“There’s still more there,” he said, adding, “They’re working hard.”
The Pirates will play their final three scheduled regular-season tournaments over the next week.
On Friday, Sept. 6, the Pirates will head to Monte Vista Golf Club for the 9 a.m. Monte Vista Tournament.
On Monday, Sept. 9, the team will head to Gunnison for the Gunnison Golf Tournament.
The following day, the team will head back to Durango for the Durango Tournament at Dalton Ranch Golf Club.
All three tournaments are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
Faber noted he’s hoping to see more consistency out of the Pirates as they work “to put it together towards the end.”
