Johnathon Smith picked up his second win of the season in as many tournaments at the Alamosa Invitational on Friday, Aug. 16, with the Pagosa Springs High School Pirates finishing fifth out of 14 teams.

The Pirates finished behind Montezuma-Cortez, Monte Vista, Gunnison and Salida.

Smith shot two under par for a final score of 69 to finish first out of 62 golfers.

That effort included recording an eagle on one hole, birdie on three holes, par on 11 and bogey on three.

“Johnathon obviously played well again — really well,” coach Mark Faber said, adding that one of the team’s golfers pointed out on the way home that Smith is undefeated on the season.

Tyler Dimond finished 27th with a score of 92.

He shot a birdie on one hole and par on four.

Cedar Liverett finished 33rd in his first tournament of the season with a 95.

He shot birdie on one hole and par on two.

Faber noted Liverett played “all right,” but added, “There’s more there, for sure.”

Isabel Galloway finished 52nd with a 110, shooting par on one hole.

The coach also highlighted improvements by Dimond and Galloway, stating Dimond got a little better and Galloway got “a lot” better from the season’s first tournament.

The Pirates are now in the midst of a break from action until Aug. 26, at which point they will play three tournaments in three days.

“We’ve got the whole week to work on stuff,” he said, noting things for each golfer to work on over the week have been identified.

The Pirates will return to action on Monday, Aug. 26, at the Durango Hillcrest Open at Hillcrest Golf Course in Durango.

Faber indicated the tournament will begin with tee times.

The next day, the Pirates will head back to Cortez for another tournament that will begin at 9 a.m. at Conquistador Golf Course.

On Wednesday, Aug. 28, the Pirates will host their sole home tournament of the season beginning at noon at Pagosa Springs Golf Club.
