Seasonal closures begin for national forest campgrounds

The San Juan National Forest has begun closing some campgrounds and reducing services for the fall and winter seasons.

Please check the San Juan National Forest’s Camping webpage before visiting the Forest to know what sites and services are available. Some campgrounds will remain open, but offer limited services, meaning there may be no camp hosts, trash pickup, water, electricity, and/or no toilets available. Snow may cause sites to be closed earlier than indicated.   

Pagosa Ranger District:

  • Cimarrona and Palisades Campgrounds will remain open until Nov. 15 with limited services after Sept. 30 (toilet only).
  • The remaining Pagosa campgrounds will close Sept. 30.

Columbine Ranger District:

  • Vallecito and Transfer Park Campgrounds will remain open until November 15 with limited services after Sept. 27 – no water, and only one loop of the campground available.
  • Haviland and Junction Creek Campgrounds close on Oct. 17.
  • The remaining Columbine campgrounds close at variable dates beginning in early September.

Dolores Ranger District:

  • Cayton Campground closed on Sept. 27 for the season.
  • Target Tree, House Creek, West Dolores, and Transfer Campgrounds close on Sept. 27.
  • McPhee Campgrounds all closed on Sept. 27 for the season.
  • Mavreeso Campground open from Sept. 27 through Nov. 22, or if snow/weather closes campground.
    • No host, water or electric.
    • Amenities provided: bathrooms, fee tube.
  • Burro Bridge Campground open from Sept. 27, through Nov. 22, or if snow/weather closes campground.
    • No host, water or electric.
    • Amenities provided: two bathrooms and fee tube.
  • Transfer Horse Camping open from Sept. 27, thru Nov. 22, or if snow/weather closes campground.
    • No host, water or electric.
    • Amenities provided: fee tube, horse corrals and single bathroom.
  • The remaining Dolores campgrounds close Sept. 27.
