Curtains Up Pagosa (CUP) is pleased to announce its summer show will be “School of Rock, the Musical,” which will be performed four times on the Pagosa Springs High School (PSHS) stage on the evenings of June 25, 26 and 27, with an afternoon matinee on June 27.
Auditions for this production will be held in the high school band room on Tuesday, April 14, and Wednesday, April 15, from 4 to 7 p.m.
The audition will require candidates to present a 30- to 60-second monologue and 30- to 60-second song. A short dance number will be taught to those auditioning as part of the audition process. All community members are invited to join this production as the cast will feature both adults and children (who should be at least 8 years old). Past CUP shows have featured performers from ages 7 to 75, thereby demonstrating this is truly community theater.
Based on the movie by the same name, this show will feature music by renowned musical composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, with the book written by Julian Fellowes, of “Downton Abbey” fame. The essence of the plot follows Dewey Finn, a failed rocker, who poses as a substitute teacher at a prep school and transforms his students into a rock band to win a Battle of the Bands.
Rehearsals for our show will commence the first week of May at PSHS, and usually run from 6 to 8 p.m. on weeknights during May and June. Rehearsals may run until 9 p.m. in June as we near the performance dates.
“School of Rock” will be directed by CUP veteran Krisha Doocy, with musical direction by Leo Baughman.
As much of CUP’s essential work is behind the scenes, we also welcome those community members interested in being a crew member, as sets, costumes and backstage work require those specific skills to ensure “School of Rock” is a theatrical success. If interested, drop by one of the audition sessions or early rehearsals in May.
CUP looks forward to presenting a high-energy performance of “School of Rock” this June, featuring a cast of talented Pagosa Country performers, with lively audiences cheering us on. Come audition, act, build, play or applaud us we once again entertain our community.
