The Archuleta School District (ASD) Master Planning Advisory Committee (MPAC) meeting originally scheduled for Monday, Oct. 27, has been rescheduled and will now take place at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 17  in the middle school library located at 301 Lewis St.

According to the ASD website, at the last MPAC meeting on Aug. 25, “the committee and Board of Education reviewed survey results from 300 voters, which showed strong community recognition of the need for safer, more modern facilities, with many families supportive when the cost is explained in simple, monthly terms. Two sites are under review: district land on Vista Boulevard and property on the high school campus. Both properties are being professionally evaluated for broad land development and utilities, environmental impact, and traffic, access, and safety.”

The website also explains that ASD plans to apply for a state Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) grant in 2026, “and may pursue a bond election in the fall of 2026.”

If a bond is approved, and a BEST grant awarded, construction on a new school could begin in 2027 that would open for students in 2029.

At a previous MPAC meeting, Doug Abernathey, representing RTA Architects, explained that based on survey results and past meeting discussion, that a new kindergarten through eighth-grade building is being considered to replace the existing elementary and middle schools.
