San Juan Stargazers to meet July 2

Posted

On Thursday July 2, we are having the next meeting of the San Juan Stargazers Astronomy Club.

We usually invite everyone to attend because we normally want to share exciting astronomy learning with everyone, not just our members, but on Thursday, July 2, we are having a members-only business meeting.

We will meet in the fellowship hall of the Community United Methodist Church at 434 Lewis St. at 6 p.m. It will also be a special happy birthday pizza party for our great nation that has made it for 250 years. (There will not be 250 candles.)

We have an agenda for the meeting that starts with looking at a brief history, since 2012, of newspaper articles, attendance sign-ins, take-home study hand-outs, membership lists, etc. We can look through these as we eat our pizza. Our biggest goal is to come up with necessary new ideas and improvements to keep our club going and growing. We basically need to get better organized.

We try to provide the best astronomy education available. Joan Mieritz in April and May presented the newest and most exciting discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope. The education team of the James Webb Telescope presents a great deal of information that it puts on the internet about each discovery, so there are photos, films and articles that are so interesting. The program is not given in lecture form, but more like a discussion so we can find out what people already know about a topic and take you to a clear understanding of the latest in astronomy. There is time for every question you have. It is a wonderful experience that you need to try.

We have had regular club members with years of experience and we have new people who have never studied astronomy before be at these presentations. The new people get the most excited because they learn so much and can’t wait for the next lesson.

I wish everyone knew how much it would add to your life to study about the most recent discoveries of our amazing universe. Soon the Webb could discover alien life, and that would change our entire world. It is best if you can learn and appreciate some of these smaller discoveries rather than waiting for the biggest discovery that will change our lives forever, shock us to our core and leave us beyond “starstruck”.

Let me invite you and say that if you ever get bored or overwhelmed and are not excited and happy to be there, you can get up and walk out (quietly). I really believe, based on the past two classes, that you will be absolutely thrilled and hooked.

It would be a fantastic family event for parents to bring their kids. If you come by yourself, you will find yourself in a new place in life. We hope to see you in August.

If you want to join our club to share this excitement, you can do it at this meeting or on our beautiful website, sanjuanstargazers.org. This will be a very important meeting for our club.

In August we will again focus on the James Webb Space Telescope recent discoveries.
