The January monthly meeting of the San Juan Stargazers will be on Thursday, March 6.
We will meet at the regular time of 6 p.m. for our social time.
We will meet at our regular location — the Community United Methodist Church at 434 Lewis St. Please use the convenient parking lot and side door that leads into the kitchen and fellowship hall. We keep the front doors locked.
Club activities
For the next few months, we will be using the time starting at 6:30 p.m. to brainstorm new ways to restructure the San Juan Stargazers Astronomy Club.
We are realizing that having a few officers is not adequate to work with the number of members and all the possible activities. Also, no one has stepped up to take Jerry Granok’s work with telescopes. We need to work on an organizational plan.
When we get some creative ideas, new plans will be presented, approved and an election will be held. We want to get modern and creative, and invent an exceptional plan that will help the club to continue and thrive for many years into the future.
Since we will be working so hard, the club will provide cherry pie and ice cream to fuel our efforts.
After we’ve made enough business progress, we will switch over to our primary goal of astronomy education with a special travel presentation by Patrick and Holly Hasenbuhler.
They recently visited Easter Island. The unbelievable huge statues would be considered archaeology, but there are connections to star alignments as with so many other ancient archaeological sites in the world. It will be amazing to learn more about such a place.
Then, we will continue our program with the new activity that we started in January. Denise Fisk will present a summary from Sky and Telescope Magazine.
Her husband, Eric, shared with the Stargazers seven years ago when he worked at Martin Marietta on sending a satellite, Osiris-Rex, to the asteroid Bennu. The satellite was completed, launched, traveled there, remained for two years to study and explore the asteroid, and then came home.
The rocks and retrieved dirt were divided up and are being studied by several institutions. The many details of this project are featured in the article from Sky and Telescope Magazine that Denise Fisk will present.
