The San Juan Outdoor Club will have a special opportunity at its Nov. 6 meeting to hear a talk by Pagosa resident and civil engineer James R. White Jr.
White has lived in the Blanco Basin for nearly 50 years and recently wrote an interesting book “Stories of the Blanco Basin Road, The Road to a Thin Place,” which traces the origins of the road and tells of the many interesting people who were brought to the Blanco Basin on it.
His book includes maps, as well as archival photos of the Blanco Basin Road from the U.S. Forest Service, but is primarily a story of people, like Ruby Sisson (our library’s namesake), musician Dan Fogelberg, Red Ryder creator Fred Harman, along with some cantankerous residents.
White will read a couple of stories from “Stories of the Blanco Basin Road” and relate them to the Murray homestead. He will also read a few stories from his new book, “Bright Eyed and Bushy Tailed,” and it should be a fun night with some great stories of the area.
The meeting starts with a social half hour at 6 p.m. with light refreshments, and the meeting gets started at 6:30 p.m.
The meeting will be held at the Pagosa Lakes Property Owners Association Clubhouse at 230 Port Ave.
