U.S. Forest Service
If conditions allow, the U.S. Forest Service will conduct a prescribed burn near Pagosa Springs this Thursday.
The planned burn will cover approximately 1,365 acres on Brockover Mesa (Turkey Springs area) northwest of Pagosa Springs.
Beginning mid-morning smoke will be widely visible in the surrounding area, including Hatcher Lake, U.S. 160, as well as Bayfield and Ignacio. Residents should expect to see more smoke from this burn than previous Brockover prescribed fires because the unit size is much larger.
Additionally, a helicopter will be used for aerial ignitions, covering more terrain quicker than firefighters on the ground lighting by hand.
Wind forecast for Thursday should help carry the smoke up into higher parts of the atmosphere, although smoke may settle into low-lying areas near the burn overnight Thursday and into Friday.
