The Pagosa Springs High School Pirate football team will be back in action this week, hosting the Kirtland Central Broncos from Kirtland, N.M. for their first regular season matchup of 2025.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 29, at Golden Peaks Stadium.
This is the second year in a row the Pirates are opening their season by hosting the Broncos. The Pirates claimed the victory in last year’s matchup, defeating the Broncos 42-27.
According to stats entered into MaxPreps, the Pirates have a total of 24 players on this year’s roster, with five seniors, eight juniors and 11 sophomores.
The Pirates are coming off of a 2024 season in which they went 5-5, including a league mark of 2-2, and got knocked out in the first round of the state playoffs.
Coach Nathan Morales is returning for his sixth year in charge of the Pirates, and boasts a career record of 23-22 with the Pirates.
Morales could not be reached for comment by press time Wednesday.
Schedule
The following schedule was accurate as of press time Wednesday, but is subject to change.
Following the Pirates’ matchup against the Broncos on Aug. 29, the Pirates will host the Centauri Falcons on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. at Golden Peaks Stadium.
The Pirates first road game of the season will be on Sept. 19, when the team travel will travel to take on Monte Vista. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Pirates will be on the road again the following week as they head to Elizabeth to take on the Cardinals on at 7 p.m. on Sept. 26.
The Pirates will then return home to host the Salida Spartans at Golden Peaks Stadium on Oct. 3 at 7 p.m., which will also mark the start of the team’s league matchups.
On Oct. 10, the Pirates will head to Bayfield to take on the Wolverines, with kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
League play will continue with another home game for the Pirates as they are scheduled to host the Gunnison Cowboys on Oct. 17 at Golden Peaks Stadium beginning at 7 p.m.
The Pirates will then head to Cortez the following week to face off against the Montezuma-Cortez Panthers at 7 p.m.
The Pirates will host the Alamosa Mean Moose at Golden Peaks Stadium on Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. in their final regular-season game.
