The Pagosa Springs High School (PSHS) Pirate track and field team competed at the Thunder-Storm Invitational in Pueblo on Saturday, April 11.

The meet was held at Colorado State University Pueblo, but was cut short due to severe weather after lightning caused the cancellation of some events.

“A number of athletes were unable to finish the 200m dash, girls’ long jump, and boys’ triple jump, bringing an abrupt end to an otherwise competitive day,” said assistant coach Nik Paniagua.

The Lady Pirates placed 19th out of the 27 schools that competed with 15 points, and the Pirate boys placed third out of the 24 schools that competed with 46 points.

On the girls’ side, Abigail Foss finished 22nd in the girls’ 100-meter dash with a time of 14.02 seconds. Molly Washburn placed 25th with a season-best time of 14.09 seconds, and Ahrianna Martinez placed 35th with a time of 14.36 seconds.

“This year Weston has a focus not seen previously, and his work ethic is clearly paying dividends in his races,” Taylor said. “He’s poised to run under 5 minutes in the 1,600.”

Ash won the boys’ 3,200 with a time of 9:58.45.

Ash outlasted two racers from Salida and became just the second boy in Pagosa Springs history to break 10 minutes in the boys’ 3,200, according to Taylor.

“Rylan has devoted himself to excelling in the team’s daily workouts, and this dedication has accentuated his performances in recent meets,” Taylor said. “On Saturday, he executed the race plan explicitly and thus was able to outrun some very talented and more experienced competitors in the 3,200 race.”
