The Pagosa Springs High School Pirate golf team picked up a win and a second-place finish over the last week.

On Friday, Sept. 5, the Pirates traveled to Monte Vista, where they finished first in the 11-team tournament with a score of 245.

“We won the tournament, which was very nice,” coach Mark Faber said. “That was a good deal.”

Faber explained the tournament also included rain and a lightning delay that lasted close to an hour.

“Overall,” he said, “it was a good tournament.”

Jonathon Smith finished second out of 61 golfers on the day with a 71 on the par-70 course.

His day included birdies on 5 holes and par on eight holes.

“Jonathan kind of struggled at the end,” Faber said, adding he played well for a while.

Tyler Dimond finished sixth overall with an 85, with his effort including shooting par on six holes.

Maximus Ibram shot an 86 to finish ninth, with Faber highlighting it was Ibram’s best round since joining the team.

His effort included shooting par on five holes.

Chatwin Pickering finished 13th on the day with an 89.

His effort included shooting par on five holes.

Ty Richey broke 100 for the first time, the coach highlighted, shooting a 97 and finishing 27th.

He shot part on five holes.

Max Brown shot a 99 to finish 32nd, with his day including shooting par on four holes.

Logan Lamoreaux finished 27th with a 97, which included shooting par on two holes.

Deaglan Denen shot a 112 to finish 50th.

On Tuesday, the team hosted the Pagosa Invitational at Pagosa Springs Golf Club, with the Pirates finishing second behind Durango in a field of seven teams.

Faber suggested he was expecting a little more from the team and that the Pirates struggled more than he expected.

Durango shot a 232 on the day, compared to Pagosa’s 247.

“As a whole, it was good,” Faber said, adding it just wasn’t as good as he thought it would be team-wise.

Smith shot par on the day with a 71 to take first, logging birdies on six holes and par on eight holes.

Faber noted Smith again struggled toward the end, but played very well for quite a while.

Dimond finished 11th out of 40 golfers with an 86.

His effort included shooting par on six holes.

Ibram finished 18th with a score of 90, which included shooting par on three holes.

Pickering finished 20th with a 92. He shot par on four holes.

Brown finished with a 95, landing him 23rd, with Faber noting Brown stepped up a little bit and played a better round.

He shot par on five holes.

Denen finished with a 99 and took 25th, with Faber noting it was good to see Denen have a better round.

Richey shot a 101 to finish 26th, shooting par on four holes.

Lamoreaux shot a 104 to finish 29th, shooting par on two holes.

Faber noted 12 Pirates played on the day, including three who had never played in a tournament before.

“We’ve got some work to do,” Faber said, noting later the team will be spending the rest of this week figuring out what didn’t work and seeing if it can be fixed before the golfers play another tournament.

Over the next week, the Pirates will play two tournaments.

The first will be the Pinon Hills tournament hosted by Farmington, N.M., beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 15.

Faber noted some of the Pirates have played the course before.

“It’s a demanding course,” he said. “You’ve got to pay attention down there.”

On Wednesday, Sept. 17, the Pirates will head back to Alamosa for their second tournament of the season at Cattails Golf Course. Play is set to begin at 9 a.m.

Faber noted all the Pirates are pretty familiar with the Cattails course.

“I think it’ll be a good week,” he said. “I think it’ll do good for us.”
