The Pagosa Springs High School Pirate golf team teed off the 2026 season with a trio of tournaments over the last week.
“It was nice to get the year started,” coach Mark Faber said, adding having three tournaments so close together was tough. “They were a little worn out at the end.”
But, he noted, the Pirates showed improvement, with the Pirates playing a little better each tournament for the most part.
“So, that was kind of nice to see out of all of them,” he said.
The Pirates opened their season on Friday, Aug. 14, at the Alamosa Invite at Cattails Golf Club.
The day featured 61 golfers and 14 teams. The Pirates took fifth at the event with a team total of 255.
The team was led on the day by Tyler Dimond’s third-place finish. He notched a 77 to finish in a six-way tie on the par-71 course, shooting birdie on two holes and par on eight holes.
Faber highlighted that Dimond played well on the day.
Chatwin Pickering took 19th with an 88, which included shooting par on four holes.
Logan Lamoreaux landed 22nd with a 90. His effort included shooting birdie on one hole and par on seven holes.
Treyson Cotts tied for 55th with a 124.
“We weren’t real competitive at Alamosa,” Faber acknowledged, adding the team has some mistakes to clean up, but that that’s common early in the year. “It was good. It was good to get started.”
On Monday, Aug. 17, the team was back in action at the Durango Hillcrest Invitational, where they took 11th out of 18 teams with a team score of 256. The day featured 102 golfers competing.
Durango, Faber noted, is a tougher course in some ways, adding everybody played all right.
Dimond finished in a four-way tie for 14th with an 80 on the par-71 course. His effort included shooting par on eight holes and an eagle on one hole.
Pickering finished as part of a six-way tie for 27th with an 84, which included shooting birdie on one hole and par on five holes.
Lamoreaux shot a 92 to finish 69th. His day included shooting birdie on one hole and par on five holes.
Maximus Ibram finished as part of a three-way tie for 88th overall with a 104.
Cotts finished 97th with a 114.
On Tuesday, Aug. 18, the team took part in the Panther Invitational at Conquistador Golf Course.
The Pirates took sixth out of 14 teams with a score of 240.
Dimond finished in a five-way tie for eighth out of 100 golfers on the par-72 course with a 77. That effort included shooting birdie on two holes and par on nine holes.
“That was a very good round,” Faber said.
Pickering finished in a three-way tie for 16th with a 79, which also included shooting birdie on two holes and par on nine holes.
Lamoreaux finished in a five-way 31st with an 84. His day included shooting birdie on one hole and par on seven holes.
Ibram finished in a three-way tie for 62nd with a 91, shooting par on three holes.
Cotts finished tied for 87th with a 104, which included shooting par on one hole.
Faber highlighted that he’s excited about how Ibram played and that Cotts “just got better and better.”
“Both those guys really improved,” Faber said.
Faber also highlighted the improvements between tournaments for several other Pirate golfers, and added there were a lot of bigger schools that took part in the tournaments in Durango and Cortez.
Currently, the Pirates aren’t slated to compete again until Sept. 8, though Faber noted they are working to fill in the gap with an additional tournament.
Faber indicated that the gap gives the golfers time to improve on what they saw at the first three tournaments, noting he can now sit down with each golfer to figure out where they were losing strokes, where they were gaining strokes and how to improve.
He added the team’s younger players who are newer to the game are also working hard.
“Now we just need some more tournaments,” he said.
