With flood damage canceling Monday’s tournament in Farmington, N.M., the Pagosa Springs High School Pirate golf team has only one regular-season tournament left before the state tournament in early October.
The Pirates were slated to play Monday, Sept. 21, at Pinon Hills Golf Club in Farmington, N.M.
“They had flood damage on the course, so we didn’t get to go play,” coach Mark Faber explained.
He added that tournament has been rescheduled for Oct. 6, which is also the second day of the state tournament.
The Pirates now have one regular-season tournament remaining — the Intermountain League (IML) Championship at Cattails Golf Club in Alamosa.
That tournament is slated to begin at 9 a.m. today, Thursday, Sept. 24.
“It looks like it might be wet,” Faber said.
Faber noted that he’s never had tournaments canceled in his years of coaching the team, but has had two canceled this season.
In addition to hoping the team will be able to compete, Faber indicated the team has an eye on state, particularly when it comes to Chatwin Pickering.
“Chatwin’s close to qualifying for state, so we’d really, really like to see that happen,” he said, adding a good tournament would help.
As of Wednesday, Sept. 23, Pickering was ranked 103rd, with the top 84 golfers as of Saturday, Sept. 26, advancing to state Oct. 5 and 6, which will also be held in Alamosa.
Tyler Dimond was ranked 37th as of Sept. 23.
“This is a great opportunity for those who do make state to play Cattails again,” Faber said, adding that for the other Pirates it’ll be another chance to keep getting better.
But, beyond being an important tournament for those who are looking to advance to state, Faber noted the IML tournament is a championship itself.
He explained the tournament determines the league champion, and helps determine Player of the Year and all-conference honors.
