The Pagosa Springs High School Pirate track and field team finished up its regular season Friday, May 8, in Pueblo, with 13 athletes advancing to the state meet in Lakewood this week.
The team wrapped up the season at the Friday Night Lights meet in Pueblo West on Friday.
Coach Connie O’Donnell only took 17 athletes to the meet.
“Friday Night Lights was a great meet,” wrote O’Donnell in an email to The SUN. “There were about 30 schools there and many great performances. We work hard to put together a workout program that helps us to peak at the end of the year and it looks like things are really working out for us. It seemed like everyone was getting personal records in their events at this meet.”
Colton Lucero, who missed most of the season with a hamstring injury, qualified for state in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash.
The meet was just his third of the season, notes O’Donnell.
“I’m really proud of how hard he worked to rehab his hamstring and of how patient he was with his recovery,” wrote O’Donnell. “I know that there are some athletes that he is looking forward to competing against at the state meet.”
The boys’ 4x100-meter relay broke a 21-year-old school record at the meet as well, finishing with a time of 42.78 seconds.
The boys’ 4x200-meter relay team just missed qualifying for the state meet.
Lucero placed second in the boys’ 100 with a time of 10.90 seconds. Johnny Baker placed 32nd with a time of 11.79 seconds, and Alex Pacheco placed 42nd with a time of 11.98 seconds.
Lucero placed eighth in the boys’ 200-meter dash with a time of 22.59 seconds, Baker placed 14th with a time of 23.44 seconds, and Hudson Mazur placed 16th with a time of 23.73 seconds.
Rylan Ash placed sixth in the boys’ 800-meter run with a time of two minutes, 5.49 seconds.
Ash also placed second in the boys’ 1,600-meter run, logging a time of 4:37.80.
Jeremiah Jones placed sixth in the boys’ 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.82 seconds.
Jones placed ninth in the boys’ 300-meter hurdles with a time of 43.40 seconds.
The Pirate boys’ 4x100-meter relay team placed second with a time of 42.78 seconds.
The Pirate boys’4x200-meter relay team placed fifth with a time of 1:32.14.
Creede Dozier won the boys’ high jump with a jump of 6 feet, 4 inches, Jones placed second with a jump of 6-2 and Gage Sams placed 14th with a jump of 5-6.
Dozier also won the boy’s long jump with a jump of 21-11.75. Mazur placed eighth with a jump of 20-2. Jeremiah Dean placed 22nd with a jump of 18-4.5.
Dozier placed third in the boys’ triple jump with a jump of 41-9, Jones placed ninth with a jump of 39-6.5, and Milo Deitemeyer placed 11th with a jump of 39-1.25.
Emile Schneider placed third in the boys’ discus with a throw of 137-7, and Aidan Vega placed 13th with a throw of 116-4.
Schneider placed 11th in the boys’ shot put with a throw of 40-1.5, and Vega placed 18th with a throw of 38-6.5.
On the girls’ side, Abigail Foss placed 16th in the girls’ 100 with a time of 13.77 seconds. Molly Washburn placed 20th with a time of 13.83 seconds. Ahrianna Martinez placed 22nd with a time of 13.86 seconds.
Nina Wood placed sixth in the girls’ 200 with a time of 27.32 seconds, Lexi Campbell placed eighth with a time of 27.57 seconds, and Foss placed 12th with a time of 27.92 seconds.
Lily DeClark placed 20th in the girls’ 800-meter run with a time of 2:43.04.
DeClark placed 15th in the girls’ 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:59.18.
The Lady Pirate 4x100 relay team placed seventh with a time of 51.85 seconds.
The Lady Pirate 4x200 relay team placed seventh with a time of 1:49.73.
Wood placed 19th in the girls’ long jump with a jump of 14-5.5.
Malorie Morton placed second in the girls’ discus with a throw of 115-1, and Liana Vega placed seventh with a throw of 100-6.
Morton also placed fourth in the girls’ shot put with a throw of 32-4.
On to state
The Pirates are sending 13 athletes to the state championship meet in Lakewood this week.
The meet is being held over three days, starting today, Thursday, May 14, and finishing up on Saturday, May 16.
Lucero is headed to state in three events. He is seeded third in the boys’ 100, 15th in the boys’ 200 and is a part of the boys’ 4x100 relay team.
Ash is headed to Lakewood for the boys’ 3,200-meter run. He is seeded 12th in the event.
Jones is headed to state for three events. He is seeded 14th in the boys’ 110-meter hurdles, third in the boys’ high jump and 13th in the boys’ triple jump.
Dozier is headed to state for four events. He is seeded 10th in the boys’ high jump, ninth in the boys’ long jump, sixth in the boys’ triple jump and is a member of the boys’ 4x100 relay team.
This is the third year in a row that Dozier has qualified for four events. This year he is the defending state champion in the boys long jump, notes O’Donnell.
Schneider is headed to state for the boys’ discus and is seeded 10th in the event.
The boys’ 4x100 relay team — featuring Lucero, Dozier, Johnny Baker and Hudson Mazur — is headed to state as well and is seeded second in the event.
On the girls’ side, Lexi Campbell is headed to state for two events. She is seeded 12th in the girls’ triple jump and is a member of the girls’ 4x100 relay team.
Liana Vega is headed to state in two events. She is seeded 12th in the girls’ shot put and 18th in the girls’ discus.
Morton is headed to state in the girls’ discus as well and is seeded seventh in the event.
The girls’ 4x100 relay team — featuring Wood, Martinez, Campbell and Washburn — is headed to state and is seeded 18th in the event.
“I’m hoping that we break some more school records this weekend,” wrote O’Donnell. “I think that we have a good chance of getting multiple athletes on the podium.”
