The Pagosa Springs High School Pirate golf team teed off for the first time this season on Thursday, Aug. 8, in Cortez, with Pirate junior Johnathon Smith finishing first.

“Johnathon had a great tournament,” coach Mark Faber said. “He won it.”

Smith finished first by logging a 72 on the par-72 course, shooting birdie on two holes and par on six holes.

Freshman Tyler Dimond finished tied for 32nd with a score of 102.

Faber indicated Dimond is a freshman who can play, but added, “Sometimes it’s hard the first time around.”

Senior Isabel Galloway finished 37th with a score of 130, and junior Max Brown finished 38th with a score of 135.

The team finished eighth out of the eight teams present.

“We’ve just got some stuff to work on,” Faber said. “We’ll figure it out.”

The tournament came after two days of official practice, according to the coach, but he noted some of the team’s golfers worked for most of the summer.

Faber explained the team has seven golfers on the roster currently, which also includes Cedar Liverett, who was an alternate for the state tournament last season, but who was not available for the Montezuma-Cortez tournament.

The coach added that the goal for the season is to be competitive, and help some of the team’s younger players learn and grow.

On Friday, Aug. 16, the team will be back in action, this time in Alamosa at Cattails Golf Course. The tournament is set to begin at 9 a.m.

Faber indicated he hopes to see the team play closer to its ability at the tournament.
