Pirates face off in series of tournaments

The Pagosa Springs High School Pirate golf team concluded its stretch of three tournaments in three days on Thursday, Sept. 10, before taking part in another tournament on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

The team has two regular-season tournaments remaining before the state tournament.

“We’re just working toward state,” coach Mark Faber said, adding the team is staying after it and he’s proud of them.

The Pirates began their stretch of three tournaments in three days at Dalton Ranch Golf Club in Durango on Tuesday, Sept. 8. To see the results of that tournament, see the Sept. 10 issue of The SUN.

The next day, Wednesday, Sept. 9, the Pirates hosted five other teams for their annual home tournament.

The team took second out of the six teams competing, with Tyler Dimond logging a third-place finish among the 39 golfers competing. He shot a 76 on the par-71 course, which included shooting birdie on one hole and par on 11 holes.

“Tyler played well,” Faber said. “Tyler had a good round.”

Chatwin Pickering and Logan Lamoreaux finished tied for eighth on the day with an 86.

Pickering’s effort included shooting par on eight holes, with Lamoreaux shooting par on seven holes.

Maximus Ibram and Treyson Cotts tied for 32nd with a 117. Each golfer shot par on one hole.

Also competing on the day for Pagosa Springs were Jack Parker, who tied for 24th with a 100; Brandt Kerns, who placed 29th with a 111; Briggs Wilson, who finished with a 119 to take 35th; Jaiden Jones, who finished 37th with a 124; and Jayden Crawford, who shot a 135 to finish 39th.

Faber added it was nice for the younger Pirates to be able to face competition and that there were quite a few people out watching the team compete, which he appreciates.

The following day, Sept. 10, the Pirates took second out of 12 teams at the Butch Braswell Memorial tournament in Salida.

Dimond led the Pirates on the day with a second-place finish out of 48 golfers. He tallied a score of 75 on the par-70 course, shooting birdie on one hole and par on 11 holes.

“Tyler had another good tournament,” Faber said.

Pickering shot an 82 on the day to finish seventh, with that effort including shooting par on eight holes.

“Chatwin played pretty well,” the coach highlighted.

Lamoreaux tied for 11th with an 87, shooting par on seven holes.

Cotts shot a 97 to finish 23rd, with that effort including shooting birdie on one hole and par on three holes.

Faber explained the team started off playing really, really well, but by the back nine were mentally worn out after playing three days in a row.

Then, on Tuesday, Sept. 15, the team took to the course at Monte Vista Country Club for a 48-golfer tournament, where they took fourth out of 10 teams.

Faber noted he expected the team to play better, but that the team just didn’t seem to “click” at the tournament.

Pickering finished tied for 14th with an 84 on the par-70 course to lead the Pirates, with that effort including shooting birdie on one hole and par on six holes.

Dimond tied for 16th with an 87, shooting par on five holes.

Cotts finished 18th with an 88, shooting birdie on two holes and par on two holes.

Cotts, Faber highlights, played the “best round he’s had in his high school career.”

Lamoreaux finished 19th with an 89, shooting par on six holes.

Ibram shot a 93 to finish 22nd, shooting par on two holes.

Brandt Kerns tied for 39th with a 110, shooting par on four holes.

On Monday, Sept. 21, the team will head to New Mexico for the Scorpion Invitational at Pinon Hills Golf Club in Farmington, which is set to tee off at 10 a.m.

“Farmington’s not an easy golf course,” Faber said. “It’ll test them.”

Following that, the Pirates will have one more tournament — the Intermountain League tournament in Alamosa — before the state tournament, which will also be held in Alamosa.

The top 84 golfers in each classification will advance to state.

Dimond, at 35th, is currently the only Pirate ranked in the top 84 in 3A.
