The Pagosa Springs High School Pirate wrestling team finished up its regular season on Thursday, Feb. 5, at the Intermountain League Championship dual against Alamosa.

The Pirates lost the dual 63-11. The Mean Moose were last year’s state runners-up. They are ranked No. 1 this year and are undefeated in duals this year, averaging more than 60 points.

“While many of the matches were competitive, Alamosa won all but two matches against Pagosa,” wrote coach Dan Janowsky in an email to The SUN.

The dual’s first match was at 113 pounds. Garrett Elliot lost by a 15-0 technical fall.

At 126 pounds, Johnny Baker lost by an 8-5 decision.

Eric Smith was pinned after three minutes and 17 seconds while wrestling at 132 pounds.

Stetson Osborn was pinned after 1:40 while wrestling at 138 pounds.

At 144 pounds, Asher McKennie lost by a 15-0 technical fall.

At 150 pounds, Vinny Fish was pinned after 3:13.

Colton Lucero won the first match for the Pirates at 157 pounds, pinning his opponent after 48 seconds.

Devin Gonzalez was pinned after 2:42 while wrestling at 165 pounds.

Ryker Hanson lost by an 8-5 decision while wrestling at 175 pounds.

At 190 pounds, Truman Vasek was pinned after 1:06.

Jimmy Elledge logged the second win for the Pirates, defeating his opponent by a 19-2 technical fall at 215 pounds.

Hunter Martinez lost by 16-1 technical fall while wrestling at 285 pounds in the final match of the dual.

The Mean Moose won two weights by forfeit as Pagosa Springs couldn’t fill the 106- and 120-pound classes.

“The Pirate boys finished the regular season with a very respectable 15 wins against 4 losses for the season and finished second to Alamosa in the Intermountain League Championship,” Janowsky wrote.

The Pirates now have their sights set on the 3A Region 3 tournament that is taking place this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 13-14, in Delta.

Action will begin at 2 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday.

The top four individual placers at each weight will qualify for the state tournament in Denver the following weekend.

Janowsky noted he hopes that four or five Pirates can qualify for the state tournament this weekend, but that the team has only one returning state qualifier.
