Pirates earn conference honors at Alamosa meet

The Pagosa Springs High School Pirate track and field team competed at the Intermountain League Conference meet in Alamosa on Friday, April 24.

Coach Connie O’Donnell emphasizes in an email to The SUN that the meet wasn’t too cold, but it was windy, as she predicted it would be.

The wind was so strong that it blew a folding chair onto the track, which hit Milo Deitemeyer during his run up on the triple jump, mentions O’Donnell. Deitemeyer wasn’t hurt and ended up having a personal best jump afterward.

The Pirate boys placed first in the meet and were crowned Intermountain League champions. Multiple boys finished first in their individual events and received all-conference honors.

“I’m not absolutely sure, but I think the last time that we won the league was in 2007,” wrote O’Donnell. “We were able to spread athletes out into different events to get points and they all performed very well.”

Colton Lucero placed third in the boys’ 100-meter dash with a time of 11.35 seconds. Creede Dozier placed seventh with a time of 11.74 seconds, and Truman Vasek placed 11th with a time of 12.02 seconds.

Lucero placed second in the boys’ 200-meter dash with a time of 23.20 seconds, Johnny Baker placed seventh with a time of 24.07 seconds, and Hudson Mazur placed eighth with a time of 24.13 seconds.

Mazur placed fourth in the boys’ 400-meter dash with a time of 54.61, and Jacob Castaneda placed sixth with a time of 55.25 seconds.

“Our sprinters had another headwind to deal with which really makes it a challenge to lower times,” wrote O’Donnell. “Senior Colton Lucero competed in his first races and performed very well. It is a bummer that he has been recovering from an injury for most of the season, but he is on track to be able to get to a state qualifying time in the two meets that we have left.”

Rylan Ash placed second in the boys’ 800-meter run with a time of two minutes and 8.90 seconds, and Elijah Julian placed eighth with a time of 2:24.71.

Ash placed third in the boys’ 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:45.17, Weston Sweet placed seventh with a time of 5:09.87, Kieran Kurz placed 12th with a time of 5:33.47, and Eli Nehring placed 25th with a time of 6:06.34.

Jeremiah Jones won the boys’ 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.36 seconds, Jaycub Carter got 15th with a time of 19.22 seconds, and Zyan Souza placed 18th with a time of 20.40 seconds.

Jones placed third in the boys’ 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.88 seconds, Carter placed 15th with a time of 48.28, and Souza placed 16th with a time of 49.53 seconds.

“Jeremiah Jones had an exceptional performance at the IML meet,” wrote assistant coach Nik Paniaqua. “He won the 110m Hurdles with a time of 16.35 seconds and secured a 3rd place finish in the 300m Hurdles, setting a personal best time of 42.88 seconds. Jeremiah is consistently lowering his times as the season concludes, and the team is optimistic about his chances of qualifying for the State Meet in both hurdle events.”

The Pirate boys’ 4x200-meter relay team placed fourth with a time of 1:36.09.

The team’s 4x400-meter relay team placed fifth with a time of 3:43.44.

Dozier placed second in the boys’ long jump with a jump of 21-3.75, Jeremiah Dean placed fourth with a jump of 20-6, and Mazur placed sixth with a jump of 19-11.75.

“Creede Dozier and Jeremiah Dean were both able to get their best marks in long jump so far this year,” wrote O’Donnell. “Right now Creede is ranked 9th and Jeremiah is ranked 22nd in the state in 3A. Creede is also ranked 6th in triple jump and tied for 7th in high jump.”

“Molly Washburn is really coming on in the sprints,” wrote O’Donnell. “She was able to get a season best by quite a bit in the 100 and the 200. She was also a significant part of our sprint relays.”

The Lady Pirate 4x400 team placed fifth with a time of 4:47.03.

“Another important piece of our relays is Senior Lexi Campbell,” wrote O’Donnell. “She has been such a great team leader and has taken these younger girls under her wing. She is currently ranked 7th in the state in triple jump.”

Campbell placed second in the girls’ triple jump with a total distance of 33-2.

“Our girls are doing well in the throwing events,” wrote O’Donnell. “Neither Malorie Morton or Liana Vega got personal bests this weekend, but they are both ranked in both events at the state level. Malorie is ranked 11th in discus and 24th in shot. Liana is ranked 16th in shot and 23rd in discus. We are really hoping for some big performances from them in these events over the next couple of weeks.”

The Pirate squads will be back in action on Saturday, May 2, when they host their home meet, the Terry Alley Invitational, beginning at 9 a.m.

“The Terry Alley Invitational is this Saturday,” wrote Paniaqua. “It’s a small meet, but our kids always seem to do well at our home meet with personal bests. We are hosting Dove Creek, Lake City Community School, Moffat, Norwood, Nucla and Sanford. Field events start at 9:00 and running at 11:00.”
