Photography Club meeting to be held March 13

Posted

Our next Pagosa Springs Photography Club meeting will be March 13 at the Community United Methodist Church, located at 434 Lewis St.

Come at 6 p.m. for socializing. The presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m. Our featured topic this month will be the “Geologic History of Colorado,” presented by Jeb Baxter.

This will be a hybrid meeting, presented in person and also available on Zoom. See below for the Zoom address.

If you are a landscape photographer, then you well know how important geology is to finding photographic opportunities. For examples, just look at the San Juan Mountains near Pagosa Springs, Chimney Rock, or the red rock canyons and arches of Utah.

Baxter’s presentation will provide an overview of the geologic history of Colorado and localities where the evidence of this history is visible in the rocks.

He will begin with the screening of a 25-minute video by the Interactive Geology Project. The video will then be followed by an explanation of key geologic processes and additional evidence of geologic history in the Four Corners region.

The talk is designed to provoke discussion with the audience, and questions are welcomed throughout.

Baxter is a retired professional geologist and professor of geology, who now lives in Pagosa Springs.

For more information about Baxter and his presentation, see our website at:  http://pagosaspringsphotoclub.org/2024/03/02/geology-of-colorado/.

Following Jeb’s presentation, we will have our usual member’s image share. PSPC Members may bring up to 5 images to share and discuss on a flash drive.

Future meetings will be April 10, when Doug and Andy will discuss websites for photographers; May 8, when Keith Bruno of Audubon Rockies will talk about birds and conservation photography; June 12, when Dave Duquemin will discuss deep space astrophotography and demo his setup for this type of photography; and July 10, when the Pagosa Weather team will discuss the summer monsoon and other weather topics of interest to photographers.

Virtual Shutter Therapy

Watch for our March Virtual Shutter Therapy topic, which will be released this weekend  on the club Facebook page at  https://www.facebook.com/PagosaPhotoClub, and will be open through April 6. The topic will be circles.

Share your photos on the theme in comments to the post on this subject. Be creative in your submissions (up to three per photographer)and like or comment on the images submitted.

Upcoming events

March 8-10: Monte Vista Crane Festival

Prepare to be amazed at the National Wildlife Refuge over the pass at Monte Vista. At the Monte Vista Crane Festival you can enjoy thousands of sandhill cranes, ducks and geese flying against a backdrop of mountain scenery.

For more information, visit  http://mvcranefest.org. And if you can’t make the festival, don’t worry — many of the cranes and other birds will be around until late March.

April 8: total solar eclipse

The solar eclipse on April 8 will be partial in Pagosa Springs, with about 72 percent of the sun’s diameter eclipsed at 12:33 p.m.

Several club members have made plans to travel to areas farther east to view totality. This will be the last total solar eclipse visible in the U.S. until Aug. 23, 2044.

For more information about the eclipse and places you can view totality, check out https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/solar/2024-april-8.

As a reminder, use solar glasses to observe the eclipse, and a solar filter to photograph it, to prevent damage to your eyes or your camera sensor.
