PCI’s Back-to-School Fair set for Aug. 22, final week to donate school supplies

The Pagosa Community Initiative (PCI) is inviting Archuleta County families to its free Back-to-School Fair on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Pagosa Springs High School commons, while also urging the community to take part in the final week of school supply donations.

Hosted by the PCI Family Resource Center, the event will provide free school supplies, complimentary haircuts from local volunteer stylists, hygiene items, and access to community organizations offering services and information on education, health, youth programs and family support.

PCI states the goal is to help local students begin the school year prepared and confident while easing some of the stress families often face this time of year.

“Our hope is that every family who attends leaves feeling supported and excited for the upcoming school year,” said Steven Viola, PCI family services director. “Going back to school should be an exciting time for children, and we want to help reduce some of the stress families may experience by providing school essentials, free services and connections to valuable community resources.”

PCI is still accepting donations of new school supplies to help meet local needs. The following items are still what is needed: large Clorox wipes, chisel tip Expo markers, paper towels, tissues, broad black dry erase markers, Sharpie markers, sticky notes, quart and sandwich size ziper-lock bags, 1.5-inch binders, and wet wipes.

Donations may be dropped at the PCI office, 550B Hot Springs Blvd., Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Alternate drop-off arrangements can be made by calling (970) 585-6461.

Families interested in attending are encouraged to mark their calendars for Aug. 22. Haircut appointments are filling quickly, and an RSVP is highly recommended by contacting Viola at (970) 585-6521 or familysupport@pagosacommunityinitiative.org. School supplies will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and no advanced sign-up is required for the supply distribution or community resource tables.

PCI is also seeking teachers and club leaders interested in leading clubs through its after-school program this year. Participants can create their own schedules, and topics are flexible. Those interested may contact Youth Programming at (970) 585-6461.
