Pagosa Community Initiative’s (PCI’s) Back-to-School Fair was a resounding success, serving more than 140 children this year — doubling the number from last year — and providing 49 free haircuts for boys and girls.
The event, organized by Family Services Director Steven Viola, grew from a supply distribution into a full-scale community resource fair that gave families the chance to shop for exactly what their children needed with classroom supply lists in hand.
The fair welcomed multiple community partners, including PIRAC, 211, Painted Sky Dental, the Department of Human Services, San Juan BOCES and Pagosa Peak Strings, adding helpful services and information for local families. PCI’s own Chrissy Hancey also helped make the day special by applying hair tinsel for students.
Families were checked in and guided through the event by Viola and Randye Taylor, while Courtney Wieters assisted students as they selected gear and school supplies. Volunteers kept the event running smoothly, and PCI expressed deep gratitude to the generous donors whose contribution of school supplies made the day possible.
A special thank you also goes to the barbers and stylists who donated their time and talent, including Cade White, Taylor Neagle, Adolfo Valenzuela, Liliana Valenzuela, Sammie Lyons and April Velarde. Together, they delivered 49 free haircuts that helped students head into the school year feeling confident and ready.
PCI also thanks the volunteers who worked the event and staffed the donation table at Walmart, as well as the Laura Jones church group, which came together with $600 in donated goods to support local youth and families.
Rebecca Tenpenny, executive director of PCI, said the event showed what can happen when the community comes together to support children and families.
“This event is a powerful reminder of what is possible when people unite around local youth and families,” Tenpenny said.
Board chair Carrie Blue-White said the impact of even a small gift can be far-reaching.
“Seeing firsthand the need on Saturday was a reminder of how important community support is for our families and youth,” Blue-White said. “Any donation to PCI can make a large impact and help meet real needs right here in our community.”
