Living the questions, the theme for this month at the Pagosa Unitarian Universalist (UU) Fellowship, is about staying curious, embracing uncertainty and being open to mystery.
We will build on last month’s theme of interdependence, acknowledging it is our responsibility to be open to wondering and listening before jumping to our own independent certainty. Our religious tradition is a living tradition because we are always learning new truths.
We will begin the month with a guest speaker, Mary Ocken, a lay leader from the UU Fellowship of Durango. The sermon, titled “Opening to a Sweet Surrender,” will explore the role of surrender, which can serve as an invitation for what might come into the spaciousness that we’ve made available. Ocken will explore everyday mysticism and how one might use the spaciousness mysticism fosters to enhance one’s connection with a soul’s deepest longing.
A native Coloradoan, Ocken has had a lifelong love affair with the world. She lives in Durango with her husband where she lives the questions of life through eco-spirituality, depth psychology, soul-collage, mysticism, new cosmology and jigsaw puzzles.
Join us Sunday, Oct. 4, at 10:30 a.m. for this inspiring service and check out the schedule for the month ahead. We offer a variety of programs listed here.
• Oct 11, 10:30 a.m.: Going Deeper Sharing Circle.
This lightly-facilitated group is a place for sharing and a practice in deep listening. The broad topic of “Living the Question” will no doubt be food for the soul, so bring your open mind and loving heart.
• Oct 18, 10:30 a.m.: Sunday service — “Meet the Moment Grounding Questions.”
Come for an engaging video and discussion as we navigate this moment we are in. “Meet the Moment” framework from the Unitarian Universalist Association offers goals in building collective understanding about the context and realities we are navigating, and how we are called in our values to respond to that landscape.
• Oct 25, 10:30 a.m.: Action Sunday.
As we engage our lived values in the world, we take actions to learn and respond to justice making. On the Sunday prior to election day, we will learn more about the work of UUCAN — the UU Colorado Action Network — and share information from the Solidarity Summit held earlier this month.
Our Community Hub is home to several other gatherings and are open to all.
The weekly Tara Meditation practice starts up this week, and continues Sunday evenings from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. A few specifics about this weekly practice follow: Learn meditation and the purpose of meditation. Just bring a kind heart and an open mind. We can even help you to find those. Newcomers are always welcome. Meditation is reviewed and practiced every week so that newcomers can learn comfortably alongside regulars. Practice is followed by a short talk and discussion. The group is currently working our way through Lama Migmar’s book “The Wisdom Gone Beyond, Teachings on the Heart Sutra.” Can’t attend in person? Join us on Zoom. Please email the Pagosa UU Fellowship to be added to our meditation email list.
Qi Gong Practice is held Mondays at 1 p.m.
The Wise and Wakeful Circle is held the second and fourth Saturdays at 10 a.m.
You can find us in the Greenbrier Plaza, 301 N. Pagosa Blvd., Unit B-15, on the north side facing Pagosa Peak. We also offer Zoom services the first and third Sundays of the month. Find our current newsletter at PagosaUU.org for the link to join on Zoom and for further information.
