In high school civics class we learned the importance of civic engagement, and that it is the responsibility of everyone to understand how governance works. Voting rights and rules were discussed, such as, “the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November in even-numbered years.”
Even with this knowledge, the average number of eligible voters, only about 50 percent, actually vote.
As part of the broader Unitarian Universalist’s (UU) Meet the Moment framework, we turn our attention to the “UU the Vote” effort, “a nonpartisan civic engagement initiative focused on inviting people of faith to deepen their commitment to democracy by organizing in their communities, supporting voter engagement, and strengthening the civic culture that sustains a healthy democracy,” as stated in an April press release from the UU Association.
The Pagosa UU Fellowship spends the fourth Sunday each month with what we call Action Sunday. This week, Aug. 23, at 10:30 a.m., we will gather to address postcards for a get-out-the-vote message. All are welcome to join us and learn more about the vital work of civic engagement. Aug. 30 is a fifth Sunday and the fellowship takes this as a day of rest and renewal as we plan for our monthly theme of interdependence for September.
The UU Fellowship meets for worship services the first and third Sundays of the month, and offers small group ministry the second and fourth Sundays, all beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Our Community Hub is home to several other gatherings that are open to all.

Qi Gong instruction and practice is held Mondays at 1 p.m.
The Wise and Wakeful Circle meets the second and fourth Saturdays at 10 a.m.
