Pagosa Unitarian Universalist Fellowship announces February programming

Posted

The Sunday services and programs at the Pagosa Unitarian Universalist Fellowship for February promise to bring people together to wonder, explore, learn and be inspired.

Our motto of “Make Friends, Do Good, Grow in Spirit” serves as a touchstone for what we aspire to.

We invite all to join us Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. Along with the fellowship’s programming, we host a variety of community endeavors to build community and spiritual growth:

• Tara meditation group & dharma practice: Sundays at 4:30 to 6 p.m.

• Qi gong practice: Mondays at 1 p.m.

• Wise and Wakeful Circle: second and fourth Saturdays at 10 a.m.

You can find us at the Greenbriar Plaza, 301 N. Pagosa Blvd. Unit B-15, on the north side facing the Pagosa Peak. We also offer Zoom services the first and third Sundays of the month. Find our current newsletter at PagosaUU.org for the link to join on Zoom and further information.

The following is our February schedule of services:

• Feb. 1, 10:30 a.m.: Sunday service, “Honoring Imbolc.”

Imbolc is a pagan holiday that falls halfway between the winter solstice (yule) and the spring equinox (ostara). Celebrated on Feb. 1, it recognizes that the earth is awakening despite being the middle of winter. It also honors the Goddess Brigit and her many attributes. Imbolc celebrates pregnancy, birth, fertility and creative female energy. It is a time to plant our seeds of intentions for the coming year. Join us as lay minister Michael Demchak reviews the history, traditions and spiritual meaning of this sabbat.

Demchak was raised with a Unitarian Universalist background for most of his childhood in Connecticut. After moving to Denver with his family in 1976, he attended the Mile High Church of Religious Science. In 2007, he became active in a pagan meetup group, which grew into the Living Earth Church through his leadership and where he co-created many circles as a pagan priest. Demchak now serves the Pagosa Unitarian Universalist Fellowship as chairperson of the Sunday Service Team, president of the Steering Committee and a lay minister.

• Feb 8, 10:30 a.m. to noon: Going Deeper Sharing Circle.

We continue our series from the “On Being” podcast, and our teacher is the extraordinary Joy Harjo, a musician, a visual artist, a member of the Muscogee Creek Nation and former poet laureate of the United States. We gather in a place of reflection and sharing as we practice the art of listening with others as we explore a muscular hope, which is so needed these days.

• Feb 15, 10:30 a.m.: Sunday Service, “An Attitude of Gratitude” with a visiting minister, the Rev. Jenny Amstutz.

Gratitude is a life-giving practice that can help us sustain joy in difficult times. Join us as we explore the spiritual practice of giving thanks.

• Feb 22, 10:30 a.m.: Action Sunday.

Join us the fourth Sunday to continue the UUA Common Read Book — “Social Change Now: A Guide for Reflection and Connection” by Deepa Iyer.
